Men's Barn Coats, Built for Cold Mornings

A barn coat is a hip-length work coat with a square cut, big outside pockets and a collar that turns up against the wind. Ours come in three materials: full sheepskin shearling, full-grain lambskin leather, and heavyweight wool. We have designed them in Matthews, North Carolina since 2009, and every one is cut to wear over a flannel. Prices run from $239.95 to $1,195. Every coat comes with 30-day returns and free return shipping on exchanges. Not sure which one you need? Read What Is a Barn Coat? Shearling, Leather and Wool, Compared.

How to Choose

  • By climate. For a Northern or mountain winter, choose the Durango shearling. For most winter days, the Wesley or Ellis wool. For fall, early winter or a milder climate, the Sheridan leather.
  • By material. Shearling is the warmest and lasts decades. Leather blocks wind best and gets better with wear. Wool stays warm when damp and needs no break-in.
  • By style. For a coat that goes from the barn to dinner, the Sheridan or the Durango in Espresso Brown. For a classic ranch look, the Durango in Saddle Tan. For plaid, the Ellis or the Wesley in Brown Plaid.
  • By fit. Every coat here is cut to button over a flannel or sweater. Size up on the Durango, Sheridan and Ellis if you are between sizes; size down on the Wesley, which has a boxier cut. See our fit guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is a barn coat?
A hip-length work coat with a square, roomy cut, big outside pockets and a collar that turns up against the wind. It was built for cold-weather farm and ranch chores, so it fits over a flannel or sweater and covers your belt.
  2. What is the difference between a barn coat and a chore coat?
A chore coat is a lighter, usually unlined work jacket with patch pockets. A barn coat is the cold-weather version: longer, warmer, lined, and usually finished with a corduroy or shearling collar.
  3. Which barn coat is the warmest?
The Durango Shearling Barn Coat. It is full sheepskin with Turkish merino wool inside, built for days near and below freezing. The Wesley and Ellis wool coats come next, and the Sheridan leather barn jacket is best for fall and early winter.
  4. Is the Durango real shearling?
Yes. It is full-hide sheepskin shearling: suede on the outside and merino wool on the inside, in one piece. Nothing is synthetic, bonded or glued in.
  5. Is a leather barn coat warm enough for winter?
The Sheridan blocks wind and is warm for fall and early winter. In real cold, wear a sweater or vest under it, or choose the Durango shearling.
  6. How should a barn coat fit?
Roomy enough to button over a flannel or sweater, with the shoulder seam at your shoulder bone and the hem covering your belt. On the Durango, Sheridan and Ellis, size up if you are between sizes. The Wesley has a boxier cut, so size down if you are between sizes.
  7. Can you wear a barn coat in the rain or snow?
Leather and wool shed light rain and snow. Shearling handles dry snow and a drizzle but should be kept out of soaking rain. Let any of them dry at room temperature, never near a heater.
  8. How do I care for a barn coat?
Brush shearling suede with a suede brush and take it to a sheepskin specialist for a deep clean. Wipe and condition leather once or twice a year. Brush and spot clean wool, and store it clean and away from moths. Hang all of them on a wide wooden hanger.
  9. What is your return policy on barn coats?
Returns within 30 days, in new and unused condition, get a full refund less original shipping. Exchanges ship back free.
  10. Where are Buffalo Jackson barn coats designed?
Every coat is designed in our office in Matthews, North Carolina, and handcrafted by artisans around the world. The Durango uses merino shearling tanned in Turkey.
