By hoodies, we of course mean hooded sweatshirts. While the term “hoodie” wasn’t coined until the 1990s, the first hooded sweatshirts were made back in the 1930s by Champion (then known as the Knickerbocker Knitting Company). The company added hoods to sweatshirts to provide a warmer option for laborers in Upstate New York during the frigid winter months. Athletes and the military quickly got in on this new apparel option for workouts and training exercises. And, once teens and young adults started sporting hoodies, they began to take off in earnest. Finally, in 1976, Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa officially launched the hooded sweatshirt to icon status.

No matter what you pair a hoodie with, the fit of the sweatshirt itself will make all the difference. Men’s hoodies with an athletic fit are always much easier to style without looking sloppy. Once you’ve chosen a sweatshirt that fits just right, try pairing it with any of these options:

1. Denim jacket

Layer your hooded sweatshirt under a denim jacket for a clean, casual look. Finish the outfit with a slim pair of jeans and boots.

2. Leather jacket

Pairing a hooded sweatshirt with a leather jacket might not be the first option that comes to mindbut it ought to be. Try layering a men’s hoodie under a leather bomber jacket. You’ll see what we mean.

3. Trucker jacket

Throw a trucker jacket like this one over a hoodie like this one, and you’ve found your new weekend go-to.

4. Jeans and sneakers

Don’t want to hide your sweatshirt under a jacket? No problem. Just pair it with a slim fitting pair of jeans and some clean sneakers, and you’re good to go.
