What does “full grain leather” mean?

You may have noticed that even our gifts for women under $100 are made with full grain leather. What does “full grain leather” mean, and does it really matter? We say yes. Here’s why: full grain leather is the highest quality grade of leather – and we care about quality. Here are 3 main distinctions of full grain leather:

Full grain leather comes from the top layer of the hide.

Since it’s the outermost/top layer of the hide, full grain leather includes ALL of the natural grain (that’s why it’s called full grain). Full grain leather is expensive for manufacturers to buy, and it’s more difficult to work with than “top grain leather”. This is one reason why full grain leather products cost more than top grain leather - top grain is thinner and more pliable for the manufacturer. (Also, yes we know the names are confusing. “Top grain leather” is not the “top grade” of leather, nor does it include the “top layer” of the hide. Rather, it’s the 2nd highest grade of leather quality, and it has the top/outermost layer of the hide removed.)

The natural surface of full grain leather is unique.

Full grain leather tells a story and reveals natural imperfections, marks, and even light brands on the surface. It’s extremely strong and durable because the natural grain contains the strongest fibers in the hide. In addition, while strong and durable, full grain leather remains extremely breathable, resulting in less moisture from prolonged contact. 

One more word: character.

As full grain leather ages, rather than wearing out, it gets even more beautiful, developing a much sought-after patina and character that can’t be easily duplicated. Truly, the more you use it – whether it’s a handbag, a clutch, or a journal cover – the better it looks and feels.
