Wearing a Leather Jacket With a Hoodie
A leather jacket works over a hoodie when the jacket has room in the body and shoulders and the hoodie is thin. The easiest cuts are a trucker, a flight jacket and a bomber. A slim moto with a band collar is the hardest.
Pick a midweight hoodie in a solid, dark color. Keep its hem shorter than the jacket’s. Then size the jacket for the layer you will wear most, because leather does not stretch to fit one you added later.
I started Buffalo Jackson in Colorado in 2009 on one idea: a leather jacket you wear over plain clothes and keep for decades. A tee, a flannel, a sweater. The hoodie has joined that list, and it is one of the most searched questions about leather jackets. The hoodie itself began as workwear. Champion first made it in the 1930s to keep workers warm in cold warehouses (Wikipedia: Hoodie). Two pieces of working gear, in other words. They go together, with a few rules. Most of the rules are about fit.
A hoodie is one of the best ways to make a leather jacket your own. It gives the jacket a completely different style, makes it less formal, and keeps you warmer.
Which leather jackets work over a hoodie
Three things decide it: how much room the body has, how the shoulders are cut, and what the collar does. Here is how our jackets compare.
| Jacket | Cut | Hide | Over a hoodie | Sizing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Driggs | Trucker, button front | Goatskin in Brown. Cowhide in Cognac Brown and Black | Easy. Straight body that ends at the waist | Runs trim. Size up from your normal size |
| Legacy | Flight jacket, zip front | Cowhide | Works with a thin hoodie. The heaviest hide, so the least give | Fits trim. Size up. Two sizes up for a flannel or midweight sweater |
| Maverick | Bomber, ribbed cuffs and waist | Lambskin | Easy. Cut more relaxed than the Legacy | Check the chart. Owners who layer often go up one size |
| Glenwood | Driving jacket, zip front, toggle waist | Lambskin | Works with a thin hoodie. The toggle waist adjusts the fit | Tailored. Between sizes, size down. One size up for heavy layering |
| Thompson | Moto, band collar | Lambskin | The hardest. Slim cut, and the band collar leaves no room for a hood | Runs small. Size up |
Our own Glenwood page says it goes over a button-down for dinner or a hoodie for Saturday morning. The Thompson can work if you size up and keep the hoodie thin, but it is cut close on purpose. If a hoodie is your everyday layer, start with one of the other four.
The hoodie matters as much as the jacket
- Weight: midweight cotton or a cotton blend. Heavy fleece or a thick zip-up fills the jacket and pulls at the shoulders and sleeves.
- Color: solid and dark. Black, charcoal, navy, heather gray or an earth tone like olive all sit well against brown and black leather. Skip big logos and graphics. The jacket should be the thing people notice.
- Length: the hoodie hem ends above the jacket hem. A hoodie that hangs below the leather looks like a mistake.
- Pullover over zip-up: a pullover lies flat under a jacket. A zip-up gathers at the front and adds a second zipper line under the first.
- Fit: slim or regular. An oversized hoodie turns a clean jacket into a lump.
Hood out or hood in
With a trucker, flight jacket or bomber, pull the hood out over the jacket collar so it rests behind your neck. It looks deliberate, and it keeps the collar from bunching. With a driving jacket or anything with a small, close collar, tuck the hood inside and let the jacket collar sit over it. Whichever you choose, pull the drawstrings even, or take them out.
How to size when you add a hoodie
A leather jacket does not stretch like a fleece or a denim jacket. Buy for the thickest layer you will actually wear. Do it before you break the jacket in, not after.
- Driggs: it runs a little trim and is built to wear close to the body. Size up and check the size chart. One Cognac Brown owner wrote that the recommended large “fit perfectly” at 6 feet and 175 pounds.
- Legacy: the product page gives the plain version. Standard size plus one fits a tee or henley. Plus two is for a flannel or midweight sweater. A midweight hoodie sits closer to the sweater end.
- Glenwood: your standard size fits a tee or button-down. One size up is for a flannel or midweight sweater, and a midweight hoodie puts you in that range. If you land between sizes, size down and let the toggle waist do the rest.
- Maverick: the ribbed cuffs and waist hold the jacket in place over a hoodie. Check the chart, and go up a size if you plan to layer.
- Thompson: it runs small. Size up, and keep to a thin hoodie.
Every product page has a size chart and a fit tool, and exchanges are free if the size is off. Our leather jacket fit guide and sizing guide explain how to measure.
Will a hoodie hurt the leather?
Not if the fit is right. The trouble is a jacket that is too tight for the layer under it. A snug shoulder forced over a thick hoodie strains the seams and sleeves. Leather settles to your shape as you wear it, so size for the layer you wear most and give it time. Condition the leather every three to six months, wipe off water, and let it air dry away from heat.
Which one to buy
- Your first leather jacket, worn casually: the Driggs. It has the denim-jacket shape most people already know how to wear.
- A heavy jacket you will wear for decades: the Legacy, in cowhide that develops a patina.
- Cool-weather wear with room to layer: the Maverick.
- Dressed-up casual that still takes a hoodie: the Glenwood.

Tom N., Maverick Leather Bomber JacketFrequently asked questions
Can you wear a hoodie under a leather jacket?
Yes. It works best when the jacket has room in the body and shoulders and the hoodie is thin or midweight. Trucker jackets, flight jackets, bombers and driving jackets are the easiest. Size the jacket for the hoodie, because leather does not stretch to fit a layer you add later.
Which leather jacket is best to wear over a hoodie?
A trucker like the Driggs is the easiest, because its straight body ends at the waist. A bomber like the Maverick is a close second, since its ribbed waist and cuffs hold the jacket in place. The Legacy and Glenwood also work with a thin hoodie if you size up.
Should the hood go inside or outside the jacket?
With a trucker, flight jacket or bomber, pull the hood out over the collar so it rests behind your neck. With a driving jacket or any jacket with a small, close collar, tuck it inside. Even out the drawstrings either way.
What size leather jacket should I get if I wear a hoodie under it?
Size for the thickest layer you will wear. Our product pages say a standard size fits a tee, one size up fits a flannel or midweight sweater, and a midweight hoodie sits in that range. If you are between sizes, follow the guidance on the product page, and check the size chart. Exchanges are free.
Can you wear a hoodie under a moto jacket?
It is the hardest pairing. A moto jacket is cut close and has a band collar that leaves no room for a hood. If you want to try it, size up, choose a thin hoodie and tuck the hood inside the jacket.
What kind of hoodie looks best under a leather jacket?
A midweight cotton pullover in a solid dark color: black, charcoal, navy, heather gray or olive. Keep the hem above the jacket hem and skip large logos or graphics.
Is a leather jacket with a hoodie warm enough for winter?
The hoodie adds warmth and the leather blocks wind, which is enough for a cool fall day. The jackets above are lightly lined or unlined, so they are three-season pieces. For real cold, choose an insulated jacket such as the Bridger Leather Down Jacket or a shearling bomber.
Does a hoodie make a leather jacket look too casual?
It makes it more casual, which is usually the point. To keep it sharp, use a dark solid hoodie, dark straight jeans and boots. Leave the logos at home.
Will wearing a hoodie stretch or damage a leather jacket?
Not if the jacket fits the layer. A jacket that is too snug over a thick hoodie strains the seams and sleeves. Size correctly, condition the leather every three to six months and let it dry away from heat if it gets wet.
