Meet the man whose mission is to provide practical and spiritual needs to men and women transitioning in and out of treatment centers, halfway & transitional houses, local jails and prison — Chris Guffey.
North Carolina native, Christopher Guffey never thought he would be his hands and knees, in a jail cell, surrendering his life to the Lord. Now four years later, Chris is the founder of Ground 40 and helps men and women like himself every day.
Before starting Ground 40, Chris spent 14 years as a forensic photographer and worked on many high profile cases. But in 2013 he found himself at the end of his rope. He was in jail, depressed, and awaiting trial for serious crimes he had committed. It was then and there that he was introduced to the bible and began to heal.
“It was huge awaking to me that God was real; so much freedom rushed in. And how alive I felt at the time is something I’ll never forget. I was alone in the flesh but never alone in my spirit and when that discovery happened for me so many emotions rushed in breaking walls and my heart of stone,” said Chris.
Now, as the executive director of Ground 40, Chris’s mission is to help other men and women like himself find hope and purpose through the bible.
Psalms 40 sums it up perfectly:
Originally, Chris started Ground 40 to help convicted felons get back on their feet after being released. Now Ground 40 services anyone in need of a fresh start. After being released from jail he realized that not everyone has a support system as he did. That’s when he decided to start Ground 40. It’s mission: to provide practical and spiritual needs for those who are transitioning in and out of halfway houses, local jails, prison, and treatment centers.
However, Chris’s approach to treatment is different from traditional centers. Instead of healing the body, he believed in healing the soul through treatment, study groups, leadership, and life skill programs. To him, it's all about positives words, positive people, and positive things.
“A lot of times I’m challenging the students to be committed to this new life and adventure,” said Chris.
Overall, Ground 40 is divided into three main categories: solid ground gatherings, chain breaker tours, and the G40 discipleship house. Then, within the G40 House there are three different level: student level, discipleship level, and “New Song” leader level. Only by participating in each category and advancing to the top level within the G40 house can a student graduate from the Ground 40 program.
“I’m truly blessed and honored to witness men complete the outline for the ministry,” said Chris. “Being a follower of Jesus Christ is no easy task, but the reward is greater to come!”
