How to Find the Right Camera Bag

BY Buffalo Jackson Journal
BY Alex Via

Let’s be honest, finding the right camera bag is often easier said than done. To start, there are thousands of styles to choose from and each comes with a long list of pros and cons. You have to take into consideration whether the camera bag will meet all your wants and needs as a photographer. Overwhelmed yet?

Lucky for you, we have some experience in this area. You see, we’ve created a few camera bags ourselves and we’ve learned from experience what makes a camera bag great. Basically, it comes down to five main features: security, function, quality, size, and style.

Security: Protecting your equipment is your number one priority.

As a photographer, your number one priority should always be to keep your camera equipment safe because your equipment is your livelihood. When you break a piece of equipment it not only hurts your heart, it hurts your bank account. Therefore, do yourself a favor and purchase a camera bag with extra security and protection. You can never be too careful.

Function: If it’s not functional than it’s not worth having.

No one wants a camera that’s complicated and difficult to use. The same should apply to your camera bag. As a photographer, your main concern should always be about getting the next shot, not about having to adjust your camera bag. Sure, style may be important, but when it comes down to style and function you should always choose function.

Quality: Always choose quality over quantity.

We’ve all heard the phrase “quality over quantity” and it’s especially true when it comes to choosing a camera bag. Forget about owning a closet full of camera bags in different styles and sizes. Instead, invest in one high-quality camera bag that will last you for many years. Eventually, your camera bag will become a part of your identity as a photographer.

Size: There is no “one size fits all."

Too many times people purchase the wrong size camera bag and either it ends up being too big or too small for their equipment. Both are “less than” options and will ultimately leave your equipment damaged. What you need is a camera bag that holds your equipment and nothing else.

Style: Your camera bag should speak to your creative eye.

Now, we understand looks aren’t everything, but when it comes to photography they sure play a big part. As a photographer, the way you present yourself says a lot about your style and talent. Therefore, you need a camera bag that shows off your personal style. Don’t settle for boring. Instead, get a camera bag that speaks to who you are as a photographer.

Now, remember this is only a guide to buying a camera bag, it is by no means the only answer. We believe you should always do your own research before purchasing a bag and if it takes a few tries to find the right one, that’s ok.
