A BRIEF HISTORY OF MEN’S HOODIES

By hoodies, we of course mean hooded sweatshirts. While the term “hoodie” wasn’t coined until the 1990s, the first hooded sweatshirts were made back in the 1930s by Champion (then known as the Knickerbocker Knitting Company). The company added hoods to sweatshirts to provide a warmer option for laborers in Upstate New York during the frigid winter months. Athletes and the military quickly got in on this new apparel option for workouts and training exercises. And, once teens and young adults started sporting hoodies, they began to take off in earnest. Finally, in 1976, Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa officially launched the hooded sweatshirt to icon status.

HOW TO STYLE MEN’S HOODIES

No matter what you pair a hoodie with, the fit of the sweatshirt itself will make all the difference. Men’s hoodies with an athletic fit are always much easier to style without looking sloppy. Once you’ve chosen a sweatshirt that fits just right, try pairing it with any of these options:

1. Denim jacket

Layer your hooded sweatshirt under a denim jacket for a clean, casual look. Finish the outfit with a slim pair of jeans and boots. 

2. Leather jacket

Pairing a hooded sweatshirt with a leather jacket might not be the first option that comes to mind—but it ought to be. Try layering a men’s hoodie under a leather bomber jacket. You’ll see what we mean.

3. Trucker jacket

4. Jeans and sneakers

Our leather jackets and vests are handcrafted using different types of leather including lambskin,  sheepskin, and cow leather. Each type of leather offers distinctive properties that complement the different jacket styles. Most differences come down to appearance, texture, and how the leather is processed.

Waxed Canvas Jackets & Vests

Waxed canvas takes all the best features of canvas, and then adds some valuable features. The wax coating repels water, improves wind resistance, and—like high-quality leather—waxed canvas looks and feels better the more you use it, developing a fine patina over time.

We have a couple of styles of waxed canvas jackets including men’s hooded jackets and a waxed canvas trucker jacket. We also make waxed canvas vests in light & dark gray or green & khaki.
