Whether you dig the classic formality of sporting a tie or you feel like neckties slowly strangle you to death, you ought to know how to tie a necktie. Specifically, knowing how to tie a Windsor knot (or “Full Windsor” or “Double Windsor”) will serve you well if you have a shirt with a spread collar—or if you need a knot large enough to compete with that beard you’ve been growing all winter.
1. Start with the wide end of the tie on the right and the narrow end on the left. The narrow side should end just above your belly button, and the wider end will need to reach several inches below that. (This will vary slightly depending on your torso height and tie length. Practice a few times to determine the right starting point for you.)
2. Cross the wide end over the narrow and then up into the neck loop from underneath.
3. Drape the wide end back down and to the left, and then around the back of the narrow end and to the right.
4. Bring the wide end back up the center toward the neck loop and through (from the front).
5. Bring the wide end back down and to the right this time.
6. Cross the wide end over the front of the narrow (right to left), and then up into the neck loop from underneath again.
7. Tuck and pull the wide end through the small loop you’ve created at the front of the tie.
8. Pull the wide end of the tie to tighten, slide the knot up, and adjust. The finished knot should be triangular and symmetrical.
