The Best Leather Briefcases for Men (2026)
The best leather briefcase for most men is a full-grain leather briefcase bag with a 15-inch laptop sleeve, a zip main compartment, and a detachable shoulder strap. Our pick for everyday office carry is the Roosevelt Buffalo Leather Briefcase Bag. For a slimmer, more formal case, get the Jefferson Leather Attaché. For the lightest bag, the Walker Briefcase Bag. For a once-in-a-lifetime bag, the Ryder Reserve Bison Briefcase.
Below are seven briefcases we make and carry ourselves, what each one is best at, and the trade-off that comes with it.
We have been making leather bags for more than 15 years, and the question we get most is not which one is best. It is which one is best for me. A lawyer who carries a laptop and two files needs a different bag than a sales rep who lives out of his car or a consultant who flies every Monday. So instead of ranking bags from one to seven, this list sorts them by the job they do best.

1. Best overall: Roosevelt Buffalo Leather Briefcase Bag
This is the bag I would hand a friend who asked for one briefcase that does everything. It is cut from full-grain water buffalo leather 1.8 to 2.0 mm thick, with a flap cover, two brass buckles, and a zip under the flap that closes the main compartment. That zip matters more than it sounds: when the bag tips over in a car, nothing slides out.
- Size: 16 in. long, 10 in. tall, 8 in. deep including the front pockets.
- Laptop: sleeve fits most 15-inch laptops (sleeve is 14.75 x 8 in.).
- Pockets: interior zip pocket, exterior zip pocket, exterior buckled pocket, open slots for documents.
- Strap: 2-inch-wide adjustable strap, 49 to 61 in.
- Trade-off: it is not light. At almost 6 pounds empty, it is built to last, not to disappear on your shoulder.

Shop the Roosevelt Briefcase2. Best for organization: Roosevelt Leather Briefcase
Same family, different layout. The Roosevelt Leather Briefcase opens to two interior compartments with pen slots and a laptop sleeve that closes with a snap, all lined in soft suede. The two front pockets sit under buckled straps, so you can reach a phone or notebook without opening the main bag. The shoulder strap is padded, which you will appreciate by the end of a long day.
- Size: 16 x 8 x 11 in. (depth includes the front pockets).
- Laptop: fits most 15-inch laptops (sleeve is 13.5 x 9.5 in.).
- Weight: 5 lb 5 oz.
- Trade-off: this leather shows light surface scratches from day one. That is the point of it. They rub out with a thumb and become patina, but if you want a bag that stays pristine, look at the Jefferson.
3. Best for formal offices: Jefferson Leather Attaché
If you wear a suit or sit across from clients, this is the one. An attaché is the slimmest kind of briefcase, and at 2 inches deep the Jefferson slides under your arm or into a tote without a bulge. It has two top handles, two zip compartments that open wide, a padded laptop sleeve, and a detachable strap. The full-grain cowhide is finished with waxes, so it has a soft pull-up look that darkens where your hands touch it.
- Size: 15.5 x 2 x 10.8 in.
- Laptop: up to 15 inches, measured diagonally.
- Weight: just under 4 lb.
- Colors: Elderwood and Black.
- Trade-off: capacity. A laptop, charger, a folder, and a notebook fill it. If you carry a lunch or a sweater too, pick a briefcase bag.

4. Best modern look: Jefferson Leather Briefcase
The Jefferson Briefcase takes the attaché’s clean lines and gives it more room: 4.2 inches deep and about 12 liters inside, split into two organizing compartments with a padded laptop sleeve and a herringbone cotton lining. One long YKK zip runs around the top so it opens wide. It looks sharp with a blazer and still works with jeans.
5. Lightest: Walker Leather Briefcase Bag
Most full-grain leather briefcases weigh 5 pounds or more before you put anything in them. The Walker weighs about 2.5. We got there by leaving out the lining and using a canvas strap, so it is all full-grain cowhide outside and raw leather inside, with a padded laptop sleeve, antique brass snaps, and heavy stitching. If you walk or take the train to work, your shoulder will notice.
- Size: 16 x 4 x 10 in., about 10 liters.
- Laptop: fits most 15-inch laptops.
- Colors: Rustic Tan and Vintage Oak.
- Trade-off: fewer interior pockets than the Roosevelt bags. Use a small pouch for cords and pens.
6. Best laptop briefcase: Limited Edition Roosevelt Laptop Briefcase
Some days you only carry a laptop, a charger, and a pen. For those days a full briefcase bag is more bag than you need. The Limited Edition Roosevelt Laptop Briefcase is 3.25 inches deep and built around the laptop: a 14.5 x 8.25 in. sleeve, a few organizer pockets, and a detachable strap. The buffalo leather has a grain finish with visible texture that wears in nicely.
- Size: 16 x 3.25 x 10.5 in., 10 liters.
- Weight: 4 lb 7 oz.
- Trade-off: it is a limited run. When it is gone, it is gone.
7. The heirloom: Ryder Reserve Bison Leather Briefcase
The Ryder is the best briefcase we make. It is cut from full-grain North American bison, which has a deep, open grain you can see from across a room and feel with your eyes closed. Inside are two compartments, a suede lining, and a laptop sleeve. It has antique nickel hardware, extra rivets at stress points, and at 15 liters it is one of the roomiest bags on this list.
- Size: 16 x 6 x 12 in.
- Laptop: fits most 15-inch laptops (sleeve is 13.5 x 9.5 in.).
- Rating: 4.9 out of 5 from more than 60 customers.
- Trade-off: weight and price. It weighs just over 7 pounds and costs $699.95. The dyed bison can also rub a little color onto light clothing in the first weeks. Condition it once before you carry it and keep it off a white shirt early on.

Every briefcase on this list is one we design, sell, and carry. We judged them on five things, in this order:
- Leather. Full-grain only. It is the top layer of the hide, the strongest and the only kind that develops a real patina. Read how to choose a leather briefcase for the difference between full-grain, top-grain, and genuine leather.
- Laptop fit. A sleeve that holds a 15-inch laptop without the zipper straining.
- Closure. A zip or secure flap on the main compartment so nothing falls out in a car or overhead bin.
- Carry options. A top handle and a detachable, adjustable shoulder strap.
- What customers say. We weighed star ratings and review comments on each bag.

How to make a leather briefcase last
Wipe it with a dry cloth when it gets dusty. Condition the leather every six months or whenever it looks dry. Let rain dry naturally, away from a heater. Do not overstuff it, because the zip and strap mounts carry the load. Store it stuffed with paper so it keeps its shape. That is all it takes for a full-grain briefcase to last for decades. Frequently asked questions
What is the best leather briefcase for men?
For most men, a full-grain leather briefcase bag with a 15-inch laptop sleeve, a zip main compartment, and a detachable shoulder strap. Our pick is the Roosevelt Buffalo Leather Briefcase Bag. For formal offices, the slimmer Jefferson Attaché. For the lightest bag, the Walker Briefcase Bag.
What type of leather is best for a briefcase?
Full-grain leather. It is the top layer of the hide with the grain left intact, so it is the strongest and it develops a patina instead of wearing out. Cowhide is smooth and dresses up well. Water buffalo is thicker and more rugged. Bison has the deepest grain and is the most durable of the three.
How much should I spend on a good leather briefcase?
Expect to pay $250 to $400 for a well-made full-grain leather briefcase, and $500 or more for exotic or specialty hides like bison. Under about $150, most bags labeled leather are genuine or bonded leather, which is split or ground-up hide that will not last.
What size briefcase do I need for a 15-inch laptop?
Look for a briefcase at least 16 inches long with a laptop sleeve rated for 15-inch laptops. Then compare your laptop’s actual width and depth, not its screen size, to the sleeve measurements. Every bag on this list lists its sleeve size.
Is a briefcase still professional in 2026?
Yes. Backpacks have become common in casual offices, but a leather briefcase still reads as more polished in client meetings, courtrooms, and interviews. Most modern briefcases also have a shoulder strap, so you give up very little convenience.
Are leather briefcases heavy?
Full-grain leather briefcases usually weigh 4 to 7 pounds empty because thick leather is what makes them last. If weight matters most, choose an unlined bag like the Walker Briefcase Bag, which weighs about 2.5 pounds.
What is the difference between a briefcase and a briefcase bag?
A traditional briefcase is slim and structured with top handles. A briefcase bag is a softer, deeper briefcase with a flap cover, often with buckles, that carries more and looks a little more rugged. Both usually have a laptop sleeve and a shoulder strap today.
How long does a leather briefcase last?
A full-grain leather briefcase that is cleaned and conditioned now and then will last for decades. The stitching and zippers are usually the first things that need attention, and a good leather repair shop can fix both.
