How to clean a leather wallet has less to do with making it look squeaky clean, and more to do with protecting and moisturizing the leather. Quality leather wallets develop a patina over time and look even better with age. We don’t want to undo or prevent that. Instead, we’ll show you how to clean a leather wallet in a way that preserves its inherent quality and beauty.
3-4 Soft, clean cloths
Straw (optional)
1. Remove all contents of your wallet, and shake out any loose dirt that may have collected inside.
2. To get into the corners of the interior, use a straw to blow out any lint, dust, or dirt that may be hiding. Then shake out anything that has been loosened. (A toothpick can help with stubborn corners as well, but use extreme caution!)
1. Using a dry cloth, briskly wipe down the exterior of your wallet to remove any basic surface dust and dirt.
2. Wipe down the exterior of the wallet with a cleaner that is specially formulated for leather. Apply the cleaner with a soft cloth in a circular motion; then remove with a slightly damp cloth to avoid clogging the pores of the leather.
3. Find a conditioner specially formulated for leather (and test an inconspicuous spot before applying to your entire wallet, as conditioning can slightly change the color of the leather). Apply the conditioner to a clean cloth, and then gently rub over the entire leather wallet, taking special care around any embellishments.
You don’t need to complete a full cleaning and conditioning process very often on your leather wallet. Really, the brisk dusting will go a long way when it comes to everyday care. But taking time to clean and condition your leather wallets at least twice a year (up to once a month) will enhance the natural beauty of the leather, prevent it from drying out over time, and ultimately extend the life of your leather wallet.
