HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR LEATHER WALLET
Cleaning a leather wallet is more about protecting and moisturizing the leather than making the wallet look squeaky clean. Quality men’s leather wallets develop a patina with age and look even better over time. We don’t want to prevent or undo that. Instead, here’s the way to clean a leather wallet while still preserving its inherent quality and beauty.
SUPPLIES
- 3-4 Soft, clean cloths
- Straw (optional)
- Leather Cleaner
- Leather Conditioner
INSIDE
- Remove all contents from inside your wallet, and shake out any loose dirt that may have collected in there.
- To get into the corners, use a straw to blow out any lint, dust, or dirt that may be hiding. (A toothpick can help with stubborn corners, but use extreme caution!)
OUTSIDE
- Use a dry cloth to remove any basic surface dust and dirt from the outside of your wallet.
- Now wipe down the exterior using a cleaner that is specially formulated for leather. Apply the cleaner with a soft cloth in a circular motion; then remove with a slightly damp cloth to avoid clogging the pores of the leather.
- Lastly, find a conditioner that’s specially formulated for leather and test an inconspicuous spot before applying it to your entire wallet. Conditioning can slightly change the color of the leather, so be sure you’re happy with the effect. If so, apply the conditioner to a clean cloth, and then gently rub over the entire leather wallet, taking special care around any embellishments.
Note that you don’t need to complete a full cleaning and conditioning process very often. (Really, the brisk dusting will go a long way when it comes to everyday care.) But taking time to clean and condition your leather wallets at least twice a year (up to once a month) will enhance the natural beauty of the leather, prevent it from drying out over time, and ultimately extend the life of your leather wallet.
COW LEATHER VS. BISON LEATHER
Men’s leather wallets made with cow leather or bison leather are both really great options. The main differences are in the grain pattern and how the leather is processed.
1. Processing
Bison leather and cow leather wallets are both made by skilled artisans in the traditions of centuries past, but bison hides are not stretched during the tanning process like cowhides are.
2. Appearance
As for quality, the same grades (full-grain, top-grain, etc.) apply to both bison leather and cow leather. Regarding hide sizes, even though a bison is a much larger animal than a cow, bison hides are generally smaller in size because they’re not stretched like cowhides. Bison leather has a distinctive grain pattern that distinguishes it from cow leather.

CHOOSING A LEATHER WALLET
While all of our men’s leather wallets are marked by durability and functionality, we know it can be hard to choose! Here are the three main options you’ll find in our collection:
You may not technically consider this a “wallet,” but the leather money clip definitely makes the list. Essentially the anti-wallet wallet, a leather money clip offers simplicity and minimalist appeal. If you can keep it ultra-tidy, a leather money clip is a clean and simple option.
Slim ID wallets (or card wallets) are the sweet spot between a money clip and a billfold. Want the slim profile of a money clip, but without all the exposure? Truth be told, you’ll be able to carry about the same number of items in a slim ID wallet as in a money clip. So, if you appreciate a classic leather wallet but you’re drawn to the appeal of minimal bulk, a slim ID wallet is a strong option.
3. Billfolds: Leather Bifold Wallets &Leather Trifold Wallets
Traditional leather billfolds, whether bi-fold or tri-fold, offer timeless appeal and even the warmth of nostalgia in our fast-paced world. (Can you still picture Granddad pulling that soft, weathered billfold from his pocket at the filling station?) Billfolds come in two main variations: bifolds and trifolds. Because of the extra fold, trifolds tend to take up more space in a pocket, but depending on the design (and how it’s filled), that isn’t always the case.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I choose the right size leather wallet?
Choosing the right size depends on your personal needs and the items you carry daily. A slim ID wallet or a leather money clip would be ideal if you prefer to carry only a few cards and minimal cash. For those who carry more items, a traditional bifold or trifold wallet offers more space and organization.
Are your men's leather wallets waterproof?
While our men's leather wallets are not fully waterproof, they are highly durable and can withstand normal wear, including light moisture. However, it's best to protect them from prolonged exposure to water to maintain their quality and appearance.
What should I do if my leather wallet gets wet?
If your leather wallet gets wet, gently wipe off any excess water with a soft cloth and let it air dry naturally. Avoid using heat sources to dry it, which can cause the leather to crack.
Can leather wallets be repaired?
Yes, leather wallets can often be repaired. If your Buffalo Jackson wallet needs repair, consult a professional leather artisan. With proper care and maintenance, however, the need for repairs should be minimal.
