Every man should know how to tie a necktie. There are countless ways to tie a tie, but we have a few favorites. One is the half Windsor. Less formal than the full Windsor, but more distinguished than the Four in Hand, the half Windsor knot is a nice middle ground. It’s classy without being bulky, is best for ties of light to medium thickness, and it’s not too difficult to learn how to tie. Give it a try!
1. Begin with the wide end on the right and the narrow end on the left. The narrow end should reach to just above your belly button, and the wider end will hang several inches below that. (This will vary slightly depending on your height and the length of your tie. Try it out a few times to figure out the right starting point for you.)
2. Cross the wide end over the narrow and then behind it to create a loop.
3. Lift the wide end and flip it over to tuck into the loop you created (from front to back, through the space between your collar and your tie) and to the left.
4. Cross the wide end over the narrow, crossing from left to right.
5. Bring the wide end up through the loop (from back to front this time, again through the space between your collar and your tie).
6. Tuck and pull the wide end through the small loop at the front of the tie.
7. Pull the wide end of the tie to tighten and adjust the knot.
