If you’re going to invest in a quality leather briefcase, it only makes sense to take care of your investment. You know that about your property and your portfolio - so don’t forget the leather briefcase by your side.
At least once a year, apply a high-quality leather conditioner with a soft sponge or cloth. Massage the conditioner into the leather over the entire surface of the briefcase; then wipe off any excess with a clean dry cloth. If you live in an arid climate, you’ll actually want to do this every couple of months. If your climate is more humid, every 6 months to a year will suffice.
If water spills onto your briefcase, blot (don’t rub) the moisture away with a dry cloth as quickly as possible. *If the water or moisture is from winter weather, remember that it likely contains some amount of salt-based products, so a moist cloth should be used. After blotting away excess moisture, allow the leather to air dry.
Speaking of weather, if (when) your briefcase gets soaked by a pop-up rainstorm, be sure you allow it to completely air dry. Lay the briefcase flat on the floor or a table so the leather is not wrinkled or slouched. Do not place it near a heat source to speed up the drying - this will damage the leather. Stuff the inside of the briefcase with newspaper to help the bag hold its shape and to help absorb moisture from the interior.
We love the rugged leather exterior of your briefcase as much as you do - but don’t forget the inside. At least once a month, take the time to wipe down the interior of your briefcase. Use a slightly damp cloth to clean the lining of your bag, removing dust and any residue from items you’ve carried. Then, prop the bag open to allow the inside to air dry.
If you plan to give your briefcase a break, do it right. Store leather briefcases in a space away from heat, humidity, sunlight, and dust - preferably in a fabric bag and or box.
Take the time to care for your leather. A quality leather briefcase can have a good, long life if you treat it right.
