The Best Brown Leather Jackets for Men
If you are buying one brown leather jacket to wear for the next decade, buy a full-grain cowhide flight jacket in a medium brown. Ours is the Legacy Leather Jacket: nearly 2 mm of cowhide, antique brass, and a 4.8 rating from 177 owners.
If you want something softer and lighter, the lambskin Maverick Bomber in distressed brown is the easiest brown jacket to wear. For real winter, the down-filled Bridger or a shearling bomber. For warm climates, the goatskin Sedona.
Brown is the leather jacket color we sell most, and it is the one I would tell a friend to buy first. Black reads sharper. Brown goes with more of what a man already owns, hides scuffs, and improves with age in a way black never does. This guide covers why, how to pick a shade, and how every brown jacket we make compares, with the fit notes and owner ratings that matter when you are buying online.
Why brown over black
A brown leather jacket works with jeans, khakis, olive pants, flannel, denim shirts, boots in any brown, and most of the colors a man wears without thinking. Black works with dark denim and not much else. That is the practical case.
The better case is what happens over time. Full-grain brown leather is dyed through the hide, so when it creases at the elbows and the stress points, the color lightens and darkens unevenly and the jacket starts to look like yours. Black leather does the same thing, but you can't see it. Brown is the color that shows its history. If that appeals to you, brown is your jacket. If you want it to look the same in year ten as on day one, go black.
One more thing. Brown is the color of the originals. The A-2 flight jackets of the 1930s were russet horsehide. The G-1 was brown goatskin. Brando's jacket was black, but Steve McQueen's was brown, and so were most of the jackets on the men who built the category. See the leather bomber jacket guide for that history.
Picking a shade of brown
Brown is not one color. We make jackets in six browns, and the right one depends on what you wear with it and how much contrast you want.
| Shade | What it looks like | Wears best with | Our jackets in it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light brown / tan | Saddle and sand tones. Highest contrast against dark denim. | Dark jeans, white or cream shirts, tan boots | Bridger Light Brown, Bridger Tan & Brown, Shearling Sandstone, Cafe Racer Distressed Tan |
| Whiskey / cognac / copper | Warm, amber-leaning brown. The classic flight jacket color. | Almost anything. Blue denim, olive, gray, plaid | Legacy Whiskey, Driggs Cognac, Thompson Whiskey, Highlands Whiskey, Shearling Whiskey, Sedona Copperwood |
| Medium brown | True brown, neither red nor yellow. The safe first choice. | Everything | Legacy Brown, Driggs Brown, Thompson Brown, Jackson Shearling Brown |
| Distressed brown | Medium brown with the finish rubbed back so it looks worn in on day one. | Denim, flannel, work boots | Maverick Distressed Brown, Cafe Racer Distressed Brown, Elkhorn Distressed Brown, Sheridan Vintage Brown |
| Mahogany | Deep brown with red in it. Dressier than the others. | Gray, navy, chinos, oxford shirts | Glenwood Mahogany, Highlands Mahogany, Teton Mahogany |
| Dark brown / espresso | Nearly black at a distance, brown up close. Lowest contrast. | Black denim, charcoal, dark boots | Bridger Dark Brown, Shearling Espresso, Durango Espresso |
If you are not sure, medium brown or whiskey. Both go with everything, and both age well.
Dark brown vs. light brown leather jackets
Most men who ask us about brown are really asking about contrast. A light brown leather jacket stands out against dark jeans and a white shirt; a dark brown leather jacket blends into a darker wardrobe and reads almost black from across the room. Neither is better. One is louder.
Dark brown leather jackets
Dark brown, espresso, and mahogany are the browns for the man who wears black denim, charcoal, and navy and wants a jacket that goes with them without going black. They show the least wear and the least patina. Our dark brown leather jackets: the Bridger Leather Down Jacket in Dark Brown (and the vest), the Shearling Leather Bomber in Espresso, the Big Sky Shearling Blazer in Espresso, and the three mahoganies: the Glenwood Driving Jacket, the Highlands Quilted Jacket, and the Teton Light Down Jacket.
Light brown leather jackets
Light brown, tan, whiskey, and sandstone are the browns for the man who wears blue denim and wants the jacket to be the thing people notice. They show the most patina, and they are the shades you see on the original flight jackets. Our light brown leather jackets: the Bridger Leather Down Jacket in Light Brown (and the vest), the Bridger in Tan & Brown, the Shearling Leather Bomber in Sandstone, the Cafe Racer in Distressed Tan, the Jackson Leather Sherpa Jacket in Tan & Brown, and the whiskeys: the Legacy in Whiskey Brown, the Thompson Moto in Whiskey Brown, and the Highlands in Whiskey Brown.
If you own both black and blue jeans and want one jacket for both, split the difference with a medium brown or whiskey. Every shade is in the brown leather jacket collection.

Prices and ratings as of October 2026. Most of these come in more than one brown; the brown leather jacket collection has every colorway. Fit notes come from owner reviews and the fit line on each product page, and they matter: leather does not stretch across the chest the way cloth does.

Which brown jacket for which man
The one jacket: Legacy Leather Jacket
The Legacy is the brown leather jacket I would hand to a man who wants to buy one and be done. Full-grain cowhide at nearly 2 mm, two zip chest pockets, zippered cuffs, antique brass throughout. It is stiff for the first month and then it is yours. The brown darkens at the stress points and the brass dulls alongside it. It runs small, so size up. Comes in Brown and Whiskey Brown.
The easy one: Maverick Leather Bomber
The Maverick is lambskin, so it feels broken in on day one, and the distressed brown finish hides the first year of wear before it happens. Ribbed cuffs and hem, a quilted lining, and a sherpa collar that snaps off for fall and on for winter. It runs roomy, so size down if you are between sizes. The Limited Maverick in Buffalo Grain is the same jacket in thicker water buffalo hide.
The light one: Driggs or Sedona
The Driggs is cut like a trucker jacket in goatskin, which is tougher than lambskin and lighter than cowhide. It is the jacket for the man who wants brown leather without the weight. The Sedona goes lighter still, with a chambray lining, and is the right brown jacket for the South, the coast, or anywhere spring and fall are long. See can you wear a leather jacket year-round? for how it layers.
The warm ones: Bridger and shearling
The Bridger Leather Down Jacket is lambskin on the outside and 530 fill power down on the inside, and it is our best-reviewed jacket in any color, at 4.8 from 284 owners. It comes in Light Brown, Tan & Brown, and Dark Brown. The Shearling Leather Bomber is warmer still, in real merino sheepskin, and comes in four browns: Whiskey, Grizzly, Sandstone, and Espresso. Our temperature guide ranks all of them.
The dressier one: Glenwood
The Glenwood Driving Jacket in Mahogany is the brown jacket that works over an oxford shirt. Lambskin, a clean collar, a quilted lining, and a toggle at the waist. The red in mahogany reads dressier than a plain brown, which is why it is the one to wear to dinner.

Shop Brown Leather JacketsWhat to wear with a brown leather jacket
- Blue denim. The default, and it is the default for a reason. Medium or dark wash with any brown. Avoid black jeans with light brown; the contrast is too hard.
- Flannel and denim shirts. A brown jacket over a plaid flannel or a chambray shirt is the Buffalo Jackson uniform. Keep the plaid in earth tones.
- White, cream, gray, olive. The four shirt colors that work under every brown. Navy works with whiskey and mahogany; it fights with dark brown.
- Boots in brown. Match tone, not shade. A whiskey jacket with dark brown boots is fine. A brown jacket with black boots is not.
- A belt that agrees with the boots. That is the only rule most men break.

How brown leather ages, and how to care for it
Brown leather darkens where it is handled and lightens where it creases. Conditioner darkens it a shade, evenly, so condition the whole jacket at once, every three to six months, and test a hidden spot first on light browns. If the jacket gets wet, blot it and dry it on a wide hanger away from heat. Distressed finishes need the same care as smooth ones, just with less worry about the first scuff. The full routine is in how to clean a leather jacket, and how to break in a leather jacket covers the stiff first month on the Legacy.
What owners say
"Heavy enough to wear fall and winter. Leather is heavy and supple, and the color looks great."
Robert S., Legacy Leather Jacket"I read the reviews about fit, and calling the customer service dept, I ordered an XL and it fits great. Super cool jacket."
Tim R., Legacy Leather Jacket, Brown"I ordered the Driggs in cognac. Top quality without question."
Mike L., Driggs Leather JacketThe note we see most on brown jackets is about fit, not color. Read the fit line on each product page, and if you plan to wear a sweater under it, size for the sweater.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best brown leather jacket for men?
For one jacket to wear for a decade, a full-grain cowhide flight jacket in medium or whiskey brown. Buffalo Jackson's Legacy Leather Jacket is that jacket, with a 4.8 rating from 177 owners. For a softer, lighter brown jacket, a lambskin bomber like the Maverick. For winter, a down-filled leather jacket or shearling.
Brown or black leather jacket: which should I buy?
Brown, for most men. It pairs with more colors, hides scuffs, and shows patina as it ages. Black is sharper and works best with dark denim and a dressier wardrobe. If you only own one, brown is the more versatile choice.
What shade of brown leather jacket is most versatile?
Medium brown or whiskey brown. Both work with blue denim, khakis, olive, gray, and flannel. Light tan gives the most contrast against dark jeans. Dark brown and espresso read closest to black and suit darker wardrobes.
Dark brown or light brown leather jacket: which should I choose?
Light brown if you wear blue denim and want the jacket to stand out; it shows the most patina. Dark brown or espresso if you wear black denim, charcoal, and navy and want a jacket that blends in; it reads almost black at a distance. If you wear both, medium brown or whiskey works with either.
Does Buffalo Jackson make dark brown leather jackets?
Yes. The Bridger Leather Down Jacket comes in Dark Brown, the Shearling Leather Bomber and Big Sky Shearling Blazer come in Espresso, and the Glenwood, Highlands, and Teton come in Mahogany. All are full-grain leather.
Does Buffalo Jackson make light brown leather jackets?
Yes. The Bridger Leather Down Jacket comes in Light Brown and Tan and Brown, the Shearling Leather Bomber in Sandstone, the Cafe Racer in Distressed Tan, and the Legacy, Thompson, and Highlands in Whiskey Brown.
What do you wear with a brown leather jacket?
Blue denim, a white, cream, gray, or olive shirt, a flannel or chambray shirt for layering, and brown boots with a belt in the same tone. Avoid black boots with a brown jacket, and avoid black jeans with light brown leather.
Does brown leather darken over time?
Yes. Full-grain brown leather darkens where it is handled and at the creases, and conditioner darkens it a shade evenly. That patina is the reason to buy brown. Test conditioner on a hidden spot first on light tan jackets.
Is a distressed brown leather jacket real leather?
At Buffalo Jackson, yes. Distressed means the finish is rubbed back during tanning so the jacket looks broken in on day one. The Maverick, Cafe Racer, and Elkhorn are full-grain lambskin or sheepskin with a distressed finish, not a printed pattern on split or bonded leather.
What is the warmest brown leather jacket?
A shearling bomber in real merino sheepskin, which comes in Whiskey, Grizzly, Sandstone, and Espresso Brown. The next warmest is a down-filled leather jacket like the Bridger, in Light Brown, Tan and Brown, or Dark Brown.
Is there a good brown leather jacket under $500?
Yes. Buffalo Jackson's Glenwood Driving Jacket in Mahogany is $399.95, the Maverick Bomber in Distressed Brown is $429.95, the Sedona is $449.95, and the Driggs is $459.95. All are full-grain leather.
Should I size up in a brown leather jacket?
It depends on the jacket. The Legacy runs small, and Bridger owners say the same, so size up. The Maverick and Glenwood run roomy, so size down if you are between sizes. The shearling bombers are true to size. Check the fit line on each product page before ordering.
How do you care for a brown leather jacket?
Condition it every three to six months with a leather conditioner, applied to the whole jacket so the color stays even. If it gets wet, blot and dry on a wide hanger at room temperature. Store it on a wide hanger, not in a plastic garment bag.
