I started Buffalo Jackson in a Colorado garage in 2009. We are still small. Five people in Matthews, North Carolina. I tell people that, and then they ask the fair question: why buy from a small brand when the big names are right there? I could answer with my opinion. I would rather let the customers answer. So we went through the reviews, all of them, and sorted them by what people said. Here is what they said, in the order they said it most.

How we counted: we read the 14,890 four- and five-star reviews published on buffalojackson.com from July 2015 through October 2026, product reviews and store reviews together, and tagged each one by the topics it raises. One review can count toward more than one reason. Counts are rounded down, never up. Numbers are as of October 2026. You can read the reviews yourself on our customer reviews page and on each product page.

1. The leather is the real thing, and you can feel it

Raised in 4,800+ reviews

Full-grain leather is the top layer of the hide, with the grain left on. It is thick, it is heavy, and it smells like leather because it is leather. Quality is the word our customers use most, by a wide margin: more than twice as often as anything else.

"Nice, high quality, heavy leather jacket. Exactly what I wanted. They recommended getting one size larger and it fits great. Nice heavy-duty zippers and very comfortable lining. Well worth the price."Nathan A., verified buyer, September 2022, on the Legacy Leather Jacket
"Man, this is a great jacket. Real, heavy, thick, cowhide. Pull up effect is awesome!! ... This is a really nice, sturdy jacket that will last forever. Top notch!"Tim P., verified buyer, May 2026

Raised in 2,200+ reviews

We cut for real shoulders and real arms, and we fit every sample on a real man before it goes to production. Some styles run snug, and the product page says so when they do. Customers often share their height, weight and size, which helps the next guy choose.

"Great jacket. Sizing is spot on and the chest is perfect and sleeves are actually long enough for me (6'1, 200). The leather is thick and supple and the lining is heavy enough for use as a winter jacket."Robert S., verified buyer, September 2025, on the Glenwood Leather Driving Jacket

What to know before you buy

Not every review is a love letter, and you should hear the rest too. Here are the things customers tell each other most often. None of them are flaws. They are what comes with real, heavy leather.

Heavy leather takes time to break in

Full-grain leather starts stiff and softens with wear. Give a jacket or bag a few months and it shapes itself to you.

"Looks fantastic. Quality, stiff leather that will take a few months to fully break in. Bag does not smell like a cheap knock off."Dean M., verified buyer, March 2026

The jackets are heavy

Thick cowhide weighs more than lambskin or plastic. Some of our leather jackets weigh more than five pounds. That weight is why they last.

"The jacket it on a heavy side (expected, since it is cow leather). It weights about 2.5kg (5.5lb)."Armen J., verified buyer, September 2024, on the Legacy Leather Jacket

A few styles run snug

Leather has less give than cloth, and some cuts are trimmer than others. When a style runs small, the product page says so. Read the size guide, and look at reviews from customers your height and build.

"Make sure to order (as recommended on the web site) one size up. I ordered my true size (medium) and it was very tight."Armen J., verified buyer, September 2024, on the Legacy Leather Jacket

How Buffalo Jackson compares to other brands

Reviews tell you how people feel. Facts tell you what you are buying. Here is how we line up on things you can check yourself. Prices are each brand's own listed prices for men's leather jackets, checked in October 2026.

Brand Men's leather jacket prices What the leather is called Who owns it Where it's made
Buffalo Jackson $299.95 to $1,195 (most around $480) Full-grain cowhide, buffalo, sheepskin and shearling, named on the product page Founder-owned since 2009 Handcrafted by artisans in León, Mexico and India, with shearling tanned in Turkey
Filson One men's leather style turned up searching filson.com: the Leather Hadlock Jacket, listed at $999 Suede leather Bedrock Manufacturing, a Dallas investment firm, since 2012 Filson says its U.S.-made share fell from 90% in 2015 to 35% in 2025
Wilsons Leather $138 to $695 (most around $315) "Genuine leather" or "100% leather" on most listings; none of the 61 men's listings name a grade like full-grain G-III Apparel Group; all stores closed in 2020, online only "Imported"
Schott NYC $445 to $1,935 (most around $1,150) Cowhide, steerhide and horsehide Schott family, since 1913 Mix of U.S.-made and imported
Overland Most around $900, up to $3,495, across 75 men's leather jacket styles Sheepskin, shearling, leather and suede The Leahy family, since 1973 Not stated on its About page
Amazon and fast fashion Often $60 to $200 Often "genuine leather," bonded leather or polyurethane Varies; many sellers are hard to trace Usually not stated

Filson

Filson has been making gear since 1897, and a lot of us grew up admiring it. Since 2012 it has been owned by Bedrock Manufacturing, a Dallas investment firm, and Filson says the share of its products made in the U.S. fell from 90% in 2015 to 35% in 2025. Its leather jacket offering is small: a search of filson.com in October 2026 turned up one men's leather style, a suede jacket listed at $999. Filson is known first for waxed cotton and wool. If leather is what you're after, we offer 65+ men's leather jacket listings, most around $480.

Wilsons Leather

Wilsons was in every mall in America. G-III Apparel Group closed all of its stores in 2020, and it now sells online only. Its men's jackets mostly run $138 to $695. Most listings call the material "genuine leather" or "100% leather," and none of the 61 men's listings we checked named a grade like full-grain or the animal the hide came from. Every Buffalo Jackson leather jacket names its hide on the product page.

Schott NYC

Schott makes the Perfecto, the motorcycle jacket that started it all, and the family has run the company since 1913. I respect them. If you want a classic American moto and your budget runs past $1,000, look at Schott. Our jackets cost less and lean western and outdoor rather than city and moto.

Overland

Overland is a family business too. It started with a bale of sheepskins and a sewing machine in Taos, New Mexico in 1973, and the Leahy family still runs it from Fairfield, Iowa. They know sheepskin as well as anyone, and their line reaches into luxury shearling coats priced like the heirlooms they are. If that is the coat you're after, Overland is a good place to look. We build for a different day. Our jackets are usually priced lower, and they're made for the guy who wants one good leather jacket he can wear to work, to dinner and on a Saturday out of town, and keep wearing for years.

Amazon and fast fashion

A $90 "leather jacket" is usually bonded leather or plastic with a leather word on the tag. Some of those listings even use our product photos without permission. If the price looks too good and the photos look like ours, they probably are ours. We have filed takedowns on several of them.

What customers who tried both say

"I purchased and returned the Thursday Boot Company Keanu jacket, and went with Buffalo Jackson and I am extremely satisfied."Robert S., verified buyer, September 2025
"Items aren't cheap but they are also well made and good quality. Considering how much more expensive other companies sell similar items, I am satisfied with my experience and expense."Kristopher C., verified buyer, February 2024
