We offer brown leather bags in many different styles from briefcases and duffle bags to handbags and totes. Not sure where to start? Here are a few ideas to point you in the right direction.

CHOOSING THE BEST BROWN LEATHER BAG FOR HIM

Finding the best leather bag for a guy can be a fun challenge if you know what to look for. First things first, what kind of man are you shopping for? Clean cut and boardroom-ready? Outdoorsy and rugged? A mix of both? Whether you’re shopping for yourself or a loved one, the good news is that it’s hard to go wrong with brown leather. And whatever you choose, if it’s crafted with quality materials, it’s going to be a winner.

Brown Leather Work Bags

Walk into the boardroom with confidence when you carry a sleek, professional brown leather briefcase or messenger bag. Something in a warm amber brown like our Jefferson Leather Attache holds important documents and papers in a slim profile. Or, if you need more space for your work essentials, check out the Walker Leather Messenger Bag in a dark brown vintage finish, equipped with thick, durable stitching and an adjustable canvas strap.

Brown Leather Travel Bags

Our brown leather bags feature a variety of designs, especially for the traveling man. Whether carried on your shoulder or stored under the seat in front of you, the Roosevelt Buffalo Leather Pilot Bag in dark brown or the Walker Leather Pilot Bag in rustic tan are durable enough to handle the stress of today’s travel with a bit of comfort and style by your side. Be sure to explore our collection of brown leather duffle bags too – whether you’re the type to pack the bare necessities, or you’re an over-packer with a boy scout mentality, these duffles will have you covered.

CHOOSING THE BEST BROWN LEATHER BAG FOR HER

When debating between brown leather handbags, purses, and totes, there are a few distinguishing factors that could be quite important to your decision. Like with the guys, though, the same good news applies: you can’t really go wrong with a well-made brown leather bag – no matter what type! Let’s take a look at some of the differences to help you narrow it down.

Straps

Straps are the easiest distinction between a purse/handbag or a tote: a purse normally has one strap, and a tote bag has two. The look of one or two straps may not matter to you, but the function probably will. Think about how you’ll use the bag and how you’ll want to access the contents in those settings – when you’re pulling something out or putting something inside. A leather tote will typically open much wider and more easily than a purse. Also, consider how you want to carry the bag (on the shoulder, in the crook of your arm, or both), and be sure the length of the strap or straps is appropriate (or adjustable).

Interior

When it comes to interior organization, a purse will likely offer more options than a tote bag. A brown leather purse or handbag will almost always include inside pockets, zippered and otherwise. On the other hand, many tote bags are just a single open carry-all space. There are, however, some beautiful tote bags with inside pockets to help keep your smaller items organized while still providing a large, roomy interior.

HOW DO YOU CLEAN LEATHER BAGS?

Learning to clean a brown leather bag without losing its natural, time-worn beauty is a very important skill. Here are 3 simple steps to follow:

Supplies

(*be sure to spot-test any products before applying to your entire bag!)

1. Dust: Begin by removing any surface dust and dirt from the exterior of your brown leather bag with a brisk dusting. Quickly dry-dusting your bag using a clean, dry cloth is a great habit to repeat every few days.

2. Clean: Using a clean cloth, apply your leather cleaner in a circular motion. (Be sure to use a cleaner that is specially formulated for leather!) Work in large sections, panel by panel, to ensure you clean the entire bag evenly. Then, use a slightly damp cloth to remove the cleaner. This type of cleaning is suitable for regular care and maintenance and should be done a couple of times a year—up to once a month. If you’re dealing with a more specific cleaning crisis, like how to clean a stain, check out our article on how to remove stains from leather bags.

3. Condition: After cleaning a leather bag, it’s imperative that you condition the brown leather. High-quality leather is a natural material, and without proper conditioning, it will dry out over time. To promote the longevity of your brown leather bag, apply leather conditioner to a soft cloth (don’t apply it directly onto the leather) and gently rub a thin layer into the entire surface of the bag. Again, work in large sections, panel by panel, to ensure even coverage. Take special care around zippers, pockets, and embellishments. After applying the conditioner, use another soft, dry cloth to gently buff the leather surface. You’ll want to condition your bag once or twice a year (even more often if you live in a particularly dry climate).

HOW DO YOU REPAIR LEATHER SCRATCHES?

At some point, you’ll probably find a scratch on your brown leather bag. Thankfully, it’s not very difficult to repair scratches in leather. Try these 3 steps:

Supplies

(*be sure to spot-test any products before applying to your entire bag!)

1. Clean: You always want to begin repairs with clean leather. Use a cleaner made specifically for leather, or use a small amount of white vinegar applied to a clean, soft rag. (Always spot test your cleaner on an inconspicuous area.)

2. Color: Color over the scratches with the brown leather marker. Don’t worry about blending the color too much at this point. You’ll do that in the next step. But, be sure you don’t get any color on stitches or other details on your leather bag. Let the touch-up color dry enough that it doesn’t transfer to your skin if you touch it.

3. Moisturize: Apply leather moisturizer to a clean, soft rag and gently rub it over the area where you used the touch-up marker. This will serve three purposes: remove excess touch-up color, blend touch-up color, and hydrate the leather.

If you need to repair leather scratches that are too severe for a DIY effort, it’s worth finding a leather repair professional. They’ll know how to repair leather scratches that go beyond the superficial, and may be able to offer protective products as well.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What types of brown leather does Buffalo Jackson use?

We primarily use full-grain and top-grain leather for our brown leather bags. These high-quality leathers ensure durability and a beautiful patina over time. Each type of leather has unique characteristics, with full-grain leather retaining more natural marks and top-grain leather offering a more uniform finish.

Are brown leather bags suitable for professional settings?

Definitely! We design our brown leather bags with versatility in mind. They are perfect for professional settings like offices or business meetings, offering a blend of elegance and functionality. Their timeless design complements both formal and casual attire.

How do I store my brown leather bag when not in use?

Store your brown leather bag in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Fill it with bubble wrap or tissue paper to help maintain its shape. Cover it with a dust bag or a natural fiber pillowcase to protect it from dust and scratches.

How can I protect my leather bag from water damage?

While our brown leather bags are sturdy, prolonged exposure to water can be harmful. To protect your bag, you can use a water-repellent leather protector. However, always spot-test any product on a small, inconspicuous area first. For everyday care, avoid exposing the bag to heavy rain or standing water.

What should I do if my leather bag gets wet?

If your brown leather bag gets wet, gently wipe off excess water with a soft, dry cloth and let it air dry naturally. Avoid direct heat sources like hairdryers, as they can cause the leather to warp or crack.

Is it normal for the color of my brown leather bag to change over time?

Yes, it's completely normal for the color of brown leather bags to evolve. Exposure to sunlight, handling, and conditioning can darken the leather slightly, contributing to its unique patina and character.

Can I carry a laptop in my brown leather bag?

We designed many of our brown leather bags to carry laptops safely. Check the product description for specific details like size and padding to ensure your laptop fits comfortably and is well-protected.

How often should I condition my brown leather bag?

Conditioning your brown leather bag every 6 to 12 months is generally sufficient. However, the frequency can vary based on your climate and how often you use the bag. Regular conditioning helps maintain the leather's suppleness and prevents drying and cracking.
