Owners Russell, Waddell, and Majors started the Pony Express in April 1860. To keep weight at a minimum, most of the riders were 20-yr-old wiry men. And their specially designed roomy saddlebag was known as a “mochila,” Spanish for knapsack. At relief stations, the mochila could be grabbed off one mount and thrown over the next in less than two minutes.
