This can be traced throughout the centuries until the modern necktie began and spread in Western Europe during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). It spread when mercenaries from Croatian serving the French were wearing a standard traditional knotted neckchief that was small and knotted around their neck. The Parisians took notice and so the word “cravat” began the from that Croatian ancestry. And eventually that evolved into the modern necktie.
